Schools resume in Edo State as SUBEB boss kicks against truancy*

As schools resume for a new academic session after the Christmas and New Year celebrations, the Sole Administrator of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Joan Osa Oviawe, has kicked against truancy by pupils and charged parents to ensure that their wards are not only enrolled but stay in schools. Dr. Oviawe gave the charge when she went on an inspection tour on the first day of the academic session to schools around Benin metropolis. Some of the schools visited include Ivbiotor Primary School, Asologun Primary School, Etete Primary School and Emokpae Primary School. Others are Olua Primary School, Aghahowa Primary School and Iheya Primary School. According to the SUBEB boss, “The turnout at Emokpae Primary School was not impressive. The Headmistress complained that most of the pupils are employed as sales boys and girls at Mission Road. After inspecting stores at Mission Road to ascertain the veracity of her claim, she condemned the act and encouraged parents to allow their wards attend school, noting that classes have commenced.
